Klein Karoo
The most easterly wine producing region in South Africa, the Klein Karoo is a beautiful valley surrounded by rugged mountains and rock formations. To the North the Swartberg Mountain range acts as the boundary between the Klein Karoo and the Great Karoo, and to the South the Langeberg Mountain ranges spreads across the horizon. The region stretches from Montagu in the West to Uniondale in the East. The area is home to a wealth of beautiful and strangely shaped rock formations and caverns; it is also home to the renowned Cango Caves. The valley boasts a wide variety of farmed goods including lucerne, wheat, deciduous fruits, tobacco and a variety of both table and wine grapes.
Stretching along Route 62, the towns and settlements throughout this region are full of friendly people, with well priced accommodation and excellent food and wines with a variety sufficient to satisfy everybody’s tastes, whether it is a family holiday or a romantic weekend getaway.
Within the Klein Karoo there are a wide variety of overlapping micro-climates which allow winemakers to create a big variety of fantastic and unique tasting wines that include dry and fortified wines, such as South Africa’s wonderful Muscadel, pot-stilled brandies and several excellent red and white wines.
For a real experience to wholly enjoy your time away, take a moment to visit this historical area and enjoy the excellent relaxing feeling it leaves you with, when you spend even a brief period in this peaceful region.
