This Region includes:
Stellenbosch, and Eersterivier

This beautiful region of lush valleys, rolling hills and rocky peaks that touch the sky is situated about fifty kilometres east of Cape Town (about an hours drive), and is covered with beautiful and old grape vines that sometimes seem to continue forever. There is also a wide variety of unique local fynbos to be found in the area.

Stellenbosch is a small town in the heart of the Jonkershoek River Valley and is one of the most beautiful mixes of nature and community to be found in South Africa. It is officially the second oldest town in South Africa. Covered from end to end with ancient oaks and buildings representative of the Cape Dutch, Victorian and Georgian eras. One of the oldest streets (Dorp Street) in the town is a National Monument. The small town makes it possible to visit many of the prominent features of the town by foot, where it becomes possible to enjoy the architecture, the mountain views, the vineyards and the orchards. There is also a variety of small restaurants and coffee shops where visitors are warmly welcomed with a well priced meal and hot cup of coffee.

No one can truly claim to be an expert in the wine industry without at least some knowledge about the wines made in this region. It possesses the oldest and most renowned wine route in South Africa. The town is also home to one of the most advanced experimental wineries on earth.

In the region there are also a series worthwhile Museums and Art Galleries displaying both international and local art collections.

For the nature enthusiasts the best way to enjoy the wilderness here is to take one of the many available hiking trails at the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve which offers hikes suitable for all, ranging from a full day hike of twenty four kilometers to much shorter trips. There are also golfing facilities available where you can enjoy being in nature and play a relaxing game of golf.

To get more information on the town and the surrounding area, visit the Tourist Information Office or the Stellenbosch Wine Route Office both full of friendly and ready to help staff. Both of these buildings are located in Market Street and many historical sites are within walking distance of these tourist information offices.
