In South Africa, this style is usually a blend of the varieties authorized for use in the Bordeaux region of France.Typically you will find these blends include only three or four of these varietals with Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot accounting for 50% to 85% of the blend. The authorized varietals include Carmenere, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Merlot. They are generally rich and complex wines, well structured, with good balance and body. A good accompaniment to red meats or simply on its own, this style is synonymous with 300 years of wine making and has been perfected many times over.
