Grenache
[gren-NASH] one of the most widely planted varietals in the world, this red wine grape ripens late in the season and prefers hot, warm, dry ,windy weather conditions and well drained soils. In South Africa, Grenache is generally used in blends to add body and a sweet fruitiness to varietals such as Shiraz, Mourvedre and Cinsaut. The full bodied and and fruity characteristics of Grenache is also well suited to the production of rose and fortified wines. Flavours and aromas found with this varietal include spicy and berry flavours which are soft on the palate. The wine itself is often high in alcohol, but careful control can yield excellent results.
