Merlot

[mehr-LOH] One of Frances,Bordeaux blending partners (Cabernet Sauvignon, Melbec, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc ), Merlot, is well known for its soft, medium bodied red wines with flavours ranging from plums, berries and cherries with tones of black pepper and chocolate. Soft on the palette, fairly low tannins and fruity flavours lend to many new wine drinkers finding this a good introduction to red wines. Currently it is one of the most planted varietals in the Bordeaux region of France. Merlot thrives in cooler environments and besides being one of the worlds most planted grapes it is well suited to growing in the Western Cape, South Africa.
