Port

Port are fortified wines, originating from Portugal. Typically it is a sweet red wine and is often used as a dessert wine. It can also be bottled as a dry, semi dry or white variety. The wine is produced by introducing a neutral grape spirit which stops fermentation early and leaves residual sugar and the alcohol content of the wine. The wines are then stored and aged before being bottled. The grapes grown for Port are generally characterized by small dense fruity palates. Port is generally concentrated with long lasting rich, sweet, heavy flavours and a higher than usual alcohol content that make the wines suitable for aging. There are a number of styles of port produced in South Africa and include tawny port, ruby port, Late Bottled Vintage (LBV), Vintage port, white port and reserve ports.
