Semillon

[Say-mee-yoN)] is a white wine used in the production of both sweet and dry variants. In the 1820’s this varietal was planted over almost 90% of South Africa’s vineyards and today covers only 1 %. In the vineyards, the plants grow vigorously and consistently. They are fairly resistant to most diseases and pests but are easily prone to rot. The grapes ripen early and prefers warmer climates where the nights are cool. Semillon is often overlooked due to its sometimes low acidity and lack of youthful aromas, however some of these wines can be fairly full bodied, soft and rich if produced by a vigilant and experienced wine maker. Aromas can vary from figs and lemons to grassiness, asparagus and bell peppers.
