Shiraz / Syrah

[SHEER-oz/ Sih-RAH] This red wine varietal whether sold as Shiraz or Syrah, enjoys great popularity the world over. It is used and sold as both a straight varietal and in blends. This wine is well known for its medium and full bodied and well rounded wines. Even with its more often than not firm tannins, the wines are typically ripe and smooth on the palette. Flavours and aromas typical of the varietal include black pepper, cloves, liquorice, dark chocolate, cherries, black berries, mint and plums. In South Africa there are some outstanding examples of the wine and it has become a favourite on dinner tables everywhere. Pair with grilled or richly flavoured meats or vegetables, game and even pizza.
